Will you be Jesus?
I have recently returned from a mission trip to Haiti, a third world country. I cannot put into words the needs that are there. We have seen poverty that just breaks your heart and experienced children who are starving for food and affection. We saw the elderly who had no government assistance or church that was taking care of their needs, other than a feeding program done by Christianville where they give out beans, rice and oil in the name of Jesus, which meets their needs. I can’t help but think of the scripture in I John 3:17 which says “suppose someone has enough to live and sees a brother or sister in need, but does not help. Then God’s love is not living in that person.”
I read this account from Max Lucado from his book, “He Still Moves Stones.” Leo Tolstoy, the Great Russian writer, tells of the time he was walking down the street and passed a beggar. Tolstoy reached into his pocket to give the beggar some money but his pocket was empty. Tolstoy turned to the man and said, “I’m sorry my brother, but I have nothing to give.” The beggar brightened and said, “You have given me more than I asked for. You have called me brother.”
To the loved, a word of affection is a morsel, but to the love starved, a word of affection can be a feast.
I had the privilege of sharing with the children in three orphanages where they have the same basic need; to be loved, appreciated and valued. My friends we don’t have to go out of the country to do that. We have children who are dying for a little attention and love. Would you be Jesus to them today?
